Headaches are associated with several dietary factors that increase risk of development including food allergies, salt intake and lactose consumption. The cause of migraine headaches is related to abnormal serotonin function in blood vessels. Deficiency in the B-complex vitamins might also induce headaches, as can large doses of vitamin A. Most migraine sufferers show low levels of magnesium, but magnesium supplementation has shown to be effective in relief only in younger women. The most frequently used herb for the long-term treatment and prevention of migraines is feverfew. Feverfew inhibits both hyper aggregation of platelets and the release of serotonin. The severity and frequency of migraines may also be reduced with the addition of omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils
